May 2, 2023 – Vermont Ends Residency Requirement for MAID

Vermont eliminated the residency requirement for medical aid in dying on May 2, 2023 after Lynda Bluestein from Connecticut sued the state. A settlement was reached in her lawsuit, allowing Bluestein to access MAID in Vermont, which also prompted lawmakers to make the change permanent. <br>
Vermont is the first state to remove a residency requirement from a MAID law. Oregon has stopped enforcing the state’s residency requirement, but the change has not been made permanent via legislation.
